IN HOUSE MACHINING FACILITY

CTL have an in house machining facility staffed by qualified toolmakers, for the manufacture of test specimens from laminates supplied by our customers. We have extensive experience in the manufacture of composite specimens (including the ability to end tab specimens when required) to the tight tolerances required by composite test standards.

CTL have found that the machining of specimens to the highest quality and surface finish significantly reduces the amount of deviation in the test results obtained.The in house machining facility also enables us to manufacture test jigs and fixtures internally, this allows us to provide a more flexible and responsive service to our clients.

We also have the ability to cater for the "one off" specialised test service, as custom test jigs and fixtures can be designed and manufactured quickly and efficiently in house.

THE MACHINING FACILITY CONSISTS OF:

  • Jones & Shipman surface grinding machine
  • Microcut vertical milling machine
  • Microcut centre lathe
  • Diamond saw
  • Band saw
  • 2 x surface grinders

IN HOUSE TESTING FACILITY:
The technical equipment in the test laboratory includes machines that allow the most demanding and difficult tasks in the area of composites testing to be achieved:
  • 2 x Zwick 250kN Universal test machines
  • 1 x Instron 100kN servo-hydraulic test machine
  • 2 x Environmental chambers with an operating range of -70°C to 250°C
  • 2 x Humidity conditioning chambers for conditioning specimens to hot/wet conditions
  • 1 x drop weight impact machine
  • 4 x Advanced biaxial extensometry for accurate strain measurement
  • Strain gauge data acquisition system
  • 4 x liquid immersion baths
  • High frequency data logging equipment
  • 1 x DMA machine

Access to the DMA and Impact Machines is via the National Centre for Bio-Engineering Services in NUIG.
